INN and Emma Bowen Foundation partner to bring interns of color to nonprofit newsrooms

 

LOS ANGELES — Nov.  7, 2017 — The Emma Bowen Foundation (EBF) and the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) are partnering to provide students of color with summer internships at up to eight nonprofit news organizations in 2018.

With funding provided by the Democracy Fund, the Emma Bowen Foundation will recruit, place and provide financial support for the eight-week internships in news media business, technology and editorial. This is the first time EBF will be seeking intern placements in independent nonprofit news organizations.

“The Emma Bowen Foundation is committed to diversifying the media industry and this grant from the Democracy Fund will support our efforts at nonprofit news organizations,” said Rahsaan Harris, President and CEO of the Emma Bowen Foundation. “We are thrilled to work with INN and its partners to place talented young people of color in environments where they can thrive and grow.”

INN’s work to grow and strengthen nonprofit news organizations includes development of career pipelines and training in technology, business and news as a social enterprise.  

“INN is honored to work with the Emma Bowen Foundation to broaden and diversify the leadership, business and technology staffs of nonprofit news organizations,” said Sue Cross, INN executive director and CEO. “This will further support the grown of independent nonprofits as a unique civic resource bringing credible news to more communities across the U.S.”

INN is recruiting host news organizations among its more than 140 nonprofit members that can provide rich experience and mentoring for the interns in environments that are entrepreneurial and dedicated to a public service mission. Special emphasis will be made on placing interns with news organizations in the South, Midwest and rural areas.
