CIR & INN Hold Best Practices Seminar for Nonprofit Investigative Newsrooms

By INN Staff INN Staff | April 12, 2011

More than 30 journalists gathered last week at the Center for Investigative Reporting in Berkeley for a workshop on best business practices for nonprofit newsrooms.

Organized by the Center and the Investigative News Network, the day-long event covered an array of practical issues, including fund-raising, building an effective board of directors, creating distribution systems that generate revenue, and using cutting edge technology effectively for news and business operations.

The workshop was sponsored by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, whose generous grant provided for the administration of the workshop and for fellowships that allowed 13 INN member organizations to attend.

Among the speakers were Robert Rosenthal, executive director of the Center, Kevin Davis, CEO of INN, Rich Robinson, INN's Director of Technology, Chase Davis, technical lead for CIR and Califronia Watch reporter for money and politics, Agustin Armendariz, California Watch Data Analyst, Meghann Farnsworth, Distribution and Online Community Manager for CIR and California Watch, and Cherilyn Parsons, Director of Development and Strategic Initiatives for the Center.

The workshop was held in conjunction with the 5th Annual Reva and David Logan Investigative Reporting Symposium at the University of California in Berkeley.
