Microsoft News Labs: No-code data visualization

September 1, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm EDT

The current health crisis underscores more than ever the importance of data journalism. But once you have the data, how might you convey a compelling story within these numbers to audiences? Power BI makes it possible for freelance journalists and small-to-midsized newsrooms to create embeddable, data-driven, beautiful interactives for their news websites that render on desktop and mobile. Join award-winning Albany Times Union data journalist Cathleen Crowley as well as trainer Bill Monroe and sr. mgr worldwide journalist relations Vera Chan of Microsoft News Labs for a demo on building a visualization and sharing downloads for election and county-level COVID-19 visualizations.

Cathleen Crowley. Cathleen is a data journalist and web producer at the Times Union in Albany, N.Y., where she is a data team of one. Cathleen has covered every beat from cops, courts and city hall to education and health. Her path to data journalism started with Excel spreadsheets and Census data and grew to ranking hospitals by medical errors, creating databases, and designing interactives.

Vera Chan: Vera is sr. manager for worldwide journalists with Microsoft News Labs. She has worked the prototypical features/A&E/culture beat at a small daily newspaper and led global editorial projects and initiatives at the world's leading online destinations (Yahoo! and Microsoft). She works with journalists and newsrooms around the world on technology to help them scale.

Bill Monroe: Bill is a Microsoft Office Trainer, helping journalists learn to use a suite of editing tools and services more effectively. His career spans 20+ years helping users, customers, salespeople, and more use technology products and services to make their personal and work lives better. The New York native now lives in Seattle, Wash., where he drinks too much coffee and produces Strokecast, a podcast that explores the challenges and opportunities for people recovering from stroke.
