#23 Big Data Journalism

May 23, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm UTC+2

Hacks / Hackers Zurich visits the Rothaus: Big Data.

For outsiders and often also professional colleagues, the epitome of what data journalists do every day: scouring huge data sets. The reality is different: Rarely does one have to deal with files that do not fit on a USB stick, rarely needing more than a short script or an Excel evaluation for a good story. Nevertheless, large, unstructured data sets are increasingly the starting point for large-scale data searches, for example the widely acclaimed "Panama Papers". Because of their sheer size, such data requires other tools - and extensive technical knowledge.

Timo Grossenbacher (SRF Data) implemented one of these big-data stories at the beginning of March this year. He showed that in recent leaked data leaks several tens of thousands of Swiss authorities e-mail addresses (including password) are - including strikingly many of the Swiss army. He had to evaluate over 900 gigabytes of differently formatted text files. How he did it, he tells in the 23rd edition of Hacks / Hackers Zurich.
