INN Receives MacArthur Foundation Grant for Training, General Support

Encino, Calif., May 6, 2015 -- The Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) has received $200,000 from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for general support of INN and for video training for INN member groups.

This is the second year of MacArthur’s original grant of a total of $400,000. The first year’s $200,000 also provided general support and video training provided by the Bay Area Video Coalition.

“We deeply thank the MacArthur Foundation for its continued support of INN,” said Brant Houston, chair of the INN board of directors. “This ensures that we can once again offer education in shooting great video and provide other services to our members.”

With $50,000 from the grant, INN will join with the Bay Area Video Coalition, an INN member, to bring in reporters from around the country for a video workshop in San Francisco.

The week-long crash course teaches reporters with little or no video experience how to shoot and edit video on the devices they have access to in their newsrooms.

The grant will subsidize the reporters’ travel costs and the training, which likely will be in fall of 2015. The training also includes built-in support of participant filmmaking projects, with recurring check-ins and feedback sessions scheduled with the instructors over the three months following the course
