Sunlight Foundation Joins the Investigative News Network

The Sunlight Foundation has joined the Investigative News Network, a consortium of 64 nonprofit news organizations across North America.

The Sunlight Foundation aids, abets and accomplishes journalism by using the latest in technology to make data available to and useable by even non-programmers.

"The Sunlight Foundation has long been a leader in encouraging transparency and accountability in government," said INN's CEO Kevin Davis. "We are very pleased to have Sunlight as a member of our network, and look forward to collaborating with its staff and other members to help inform the public."

Founded in 2006, Sunlight has journalism at the core of its mission. Its Reporting Group produces stories based on Sunlight's data and provides training and other assistance to reporters trying to do their own analysis.

"In joining INN, we hope to make our journalism, our data and our training more widely available," said Sunlight's Managing Editor Kathy Kiely. "We believe that non-profits are a crucial part of the information ecosystem at a time when the economic models for traditional journalism are collapsing."

INN was founded in 2009 and is headquartered in Los Angeles. It was created to help the increasing number of nonprofit newsrooms pool resources, promote editorial collaborations and get wider distribution of their work. INN is composed of organizations that produce nonpartisan investigative and public service journalism of regional, national and international scope. INN members produce original, multi-media longform and ongoing stories and analyses of public data to better inform the communities they serve.
