This week one of INN’s newest members, the Connecticut Health Investigative Team, launches its website aimed at focusing on health and safety stories in Connecticut and the surrounding region. Here is a bit about how the site was started from C-HIT Editor Lynne DeLucia and Senior Writer Lisa Chedekel.
We, Lisa Chedekel and Lynne DeLucia, are longtime Connecticut print journalists – most recently at The Hartford Courant – who have a special interest in issues of health and safety, as well as a background in investigative reporting and editing. We started to discuss launching C-HIT more than a year ago, with the idea that we wanted find a way to help fill the void in in-depth reporting on health in New England, specifically in Connecticut. We were able to secure foundation start-up funding and to join forces with the Online Journalism Project of Connecticut – and then to rally a team of writers to start producing stories.
We also have a nice partnership with the school of journalism at Quinnipiac University, which allows us to work with and train the next generation of reporters. We had two Quinnipiac interns working with C-HIT this semester and have more coming. Being part of INN has made us feel part of a new community of journalists – different from the one we knew in the newspaper world, but just as supportive and encouraging.
